This was the first year that I was able to stay up and watch the Draft live on television, one of the drawbacks of being a fan of the Pistons… the 5 hours time difference between Scotland and Detroit!
I am glad that I did stay up though and I have to admit that I am happy with our draft picks this year. Was pleasantly surprised we managed to pick up Monroe at 7 and in White we pick up a guy that had the potential to be a 1st round guy in the 2nd round, in my opinion!
I eagerly awaited Summer League to see these guys in action and was happy with their overall performances. I’m not even going to be critical of their performances seeing as it was Summer League - where guys go to learn things with their potential new teams and we all know the real work starts in a couple of months!
I’ll start with our first pick, Greg Monroe. Was slightly confused by his first game, not really sure if I was maybe expecting more but as the games went on he got better and better. This led to his final game totals of 27 points and 14 boards… we’ll have some of that next season please! I think what I’d like to see is Ben taking Greg aside and get him to be a dominant big man on the defensive end which will really complement his offensive ability.
Tarrico White played a great first game and put in solid performances
throughout. White is a guy that can play both guard positions but he apparently prefers playing at 1 so we’ll hopefully see some developments from him at the point but I was generally happy with him and his game. I just wonder if having White on the roster will have an effect on Joe D’s decision to re-sign Will Bynum?! Only time will tell and I’ll be sure to provide my views on whatever decision is made with that!
Above everything, what these draft picks have given us is options, not only in terms of them playing on the court but also what we do with the rest of the roster – it opens up opportunities for trades as well. It’ll will be an interesting summer as Joe looks to make some moves – let’s just hope he makes the right decisions this year!
